Introduction
Don’t Just Stare has been developed by Childnet International and is designed to assist teachers as they support young people in creating websites.
The Don’t Just Stare guide helps teachers support young people in the stages of developing ideas, researching, generating content on a specific topic from any curriculum area, considering components of a website, and learning how to present and share knowledge through designing and constructing their own online project. It includes templates, checklists, and supplementary links and resource.
Don’t Just Stare contains 3 different modules that can either be taught sequentially or as independent activities:
- PREPARE: research and develop content for the project.
- DARE: consider the components and usability, and create the style, purpose, and structure of a proposed website.
- SHARE: use a web development software system to get content online and share ideas and views with a global audience.
The resource also looks carefully at the safety issues of creating websites and online digital communication and links to Childnet’s award-winning internet safety and awareness programme for young people: Kidsmart.
The resource has been written by teachers at Childnet and is based on eight years of experience of supporting and showcasing inspiring international projects developed by young people through the charity’s Childnet Awards and Academy programmes: www.childnetacademy.org.
