TONY BLAIR PRAISES INNOVATIVE INTERNET AWARDS
The Prime Minister Tony Blair sent a personal message of
support to the winners of the Cable & Wireless Childnet
Awards which were held at the National Maritime Museum
Sydney, Australia on Thursday evening. In the message
which was read out to a packed audience and webcast live
on the Internet, Mr Blair says, "Information is
the key to the modern age, a new age that offers possibilities
for the future limited only by the boundaries of our
imaginations. The winners of the 1999 Cable & Wireless
Childnet International Awards provide vivid examples
of how this potential can be innovatively realised for
the benefit of learners of all ages and nationalities.
I would like to pass on my sincere congratulations to
them, and to all those who provided entries to this competition."
The Awards were hosted in Australia by Cable & Wireless
Optus and are run by Childnet International, a non-profit
organisation which seeks to promote the interests of children
in international communication. The Awards are given to
children, and those working with them, who are developing
innovative projects which involve other children using
the Internet. This year entries were received from over
24 countries, across every continent including three entries
from the UK.
Attending the ceremony on Thursday were winners from, Ireland,
Australia, Egypt, Japan, USA, Canada, Japan, as well
as 3 projects from the UK. As well as winning a trip
to Sydney, the winners were presented with a certificate
and money to continue to develop their project. A team
of international judges looked carefully at the way the
projects helped other children to interact and participate
together using the new media. Nigel Williams, the Director
of Childnet and chairman of the judges said, "What
makes the Internet different from other media is its
power to connect. Children today love interacting and
participating with the new technology, and when used
in a safe environment the Internet has tremendous potential
to help children learn more about other cultures and
issues. The Childnet Awards recognise children who are
developing outstanding international projects and we
as adults have much to learn from them."
