Judges Announcement: Young People making the Net
work!
Winners from the 2004 Cable & Wireless Childnet Academy
show the positive power of the Internet for young people.
Childnet, the children’s Internet charity, announced
today the results of its annual Cable & Wireless Childnet
Academy programme which rewards young people who are developing
exciting online projects, or have ideas for new projects,
which will really benefit other children.
This year the Academy competition attracted 250 entries
from over 40 countries world-wide and after an extensive
judging process involving young people and an international
team of judges, 12 young winners were selected to this year’s
Academy to be held in London in April 2004. These young
people will each receive a grant from the Academy web development
fund (£30,000) plus training and mentoring from Childnet
at the Academy week in London in April, and then ongoing
throughout the year via the Academy forum and international
network of previous Childnet winners.
Stephen Carrick-Davies, CEO of Childnet says,
“At a time when so much attention has been given
to the dangers of the Internet for children it is encouraging
to see how young people themselves are engaging in real
life issues and utilising the positive aspects of the
Internet to directly help other children and young people.
Through this programme we aim to nurture a new generation
of Internet experts who are committed to using the Internet
positively to inspire others.”
Winning projects this year come from countries including,
Australia, Italy, Ireland, Jamaica, Netherlands, Singapore,
Taiwan, USA and the UK. All developed exclusively by young
people these projects show how young people engage online
in real life issues for example, overcoming disability discrimination,
preserving Gaelic heritage , environmental sustainability,
sharing original music online, supporting young women as
leaders, and emerging health issues such as SARS.
During the Academy week in London these winning projects
will be mentored by a group of international professionals
and previous winners so that their projects can be strengthened
and developed.
Tanya Eddowes, Childnet’s Academy co-ordinator says,
“We have much to learn from these young people
who are using the Internet creatively and positively to
help other young people. During the week we will be running
sessions on “hot topics” such as Internet
safety, web accessibility, writing for the web, and sustaining
your project. Childnet will provide ongoing support to
the Academy graduates so that they can disseminate their
knowledge both offline and online to schools around the
world.”
